Today, I’m getting real about change — especially the kind that means letting go of habits holding you back, like relying on alcohol as a crutch. I know this change isn’t easy. I was stuck in the gray area drinking cycle for decades, clinging to routines even when I know I needed to evolve. So, I dug deep into my own journey, revisited what I learned along the way, and distilled it all into five essential truths about creating lasting change. Trust me: these truths helped me move beyond a cycle of self-sabotage, and they can help you too.

Truth #1: Change Must Be For You

Let’s be honest—while it’s tempting to make changes to please someone else, lasting transformation starts when it’s for your own good.

  • Ask yourself: Why do I truly want this change?

  • Reflect on the benefits: Imagine feeling strong, energized, and confident in your own skin without relying on alcohol.

  • Remember: When the “why” is personal, the motivation holds up even when you’re alone.

Your health, mental peace, and overall well-being are too important to compromise. Don’t make a change solely to impress others—make it for you.

Truth #2: The Change Is Up to You

No one will do the work for you.

  • Own your decisions: You can lean on supportive communities and trusted coaches, but the commitment has to come from within.

  • Take small steps: Instead of saying “I’ll start tomorrow when I have more time,” consider this: start with just two minutes of a new habit—whether that’s a walk, a mindfulness exercise, or skipping that drink tonight.

Every journey begins with a tiny, committed step. Action is the spark that ignites change.

Truth #3: The Change Is Necessary

Sometimes, we convince ourselves that it would be “nice” not to drink, or that it wouldn’t hurt if we just carried on as we are.

  • Ask: What will my life look like in a year if nothing changes?

  • Face reality: I remember looking in the mirror during a SoulCycle session and seeing the toll that chronic alcohol use was taking on my body and mind. It wasn’t just about aesthetics; I was endangering my health.

Recognize that maintaining the status quo is not a viable option if you want the life you’re truly meant to live.

Truth #4: The Change Must Be Urgent

Waiting for “the right moment” is a myth.

  • No more postponing: Future you won’t magically have more time, energy, or motivation. The idea of “I’ll start when I’m ready” only delays progress.

  • Set priorities: Start with one small commitment today—whether it’s a five-minute walk in the sunlight or choosing not to drink tonight.

  • Visualize: Think of your future self as a dear friend cheering you on to make a change now. Your better self is counting on you.

Urgency is not about panic; it’s about honoring your future and recognizing that every moment matters.

Truth #5: You Have to Believe Change Is Possible

Hope is the fuel for transformation.

  • Visualize your future: Picture the person you want to be—energized, clear-minded, and in control of your life.

  • Cultivate that belief: When you trust that a better life is within reach, your mindset shifts. Instead of fixating on past mistakes or self-doubt, you lean into hope and possibility.

  • Remember this truth: Confidence, as I’ve learned, comes last. First, there’s commitment, then courage, capability, and finally, confidence.

The belief in your ability to change is what will propel you from taking that small first step to ultimately transforming your life.

Bringing It All Together

To recap, here are the five truths for lasting change:

  1. It’s for you. Your journey must start with your own well-being in mind.

  2. It’s up to you. Take action and own your choices.

  3. It’s necessary. Recognize that staying the same isn’t an option.

  4. It’s urgent. Your future self deserves the changes you make today.

  5. It’s possible. Believe in your power to transform your life.
